A soap dodger extraordinaire …

The name Matt Lindland might not trip off the tongue.

But in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he won a silver medal for the United States in the Greco-Roman Wrestling competition.

So far so unremarkable.

But what set Lindland apart were his less savoury competitive tactics.

Most athletes in this discipline rely on a blend of massive upper body power, technique, and strategic thinking.

But Lindland had a rather less orthodox tactic up he sleeve.

His party trick was to rely on smell to distract his opponent.

More specifically, a foul-smelling body odour that would have put a soap dodging skunk to shame.

Forgoing all attention to personal hygiene in the weeks before a competition he would climb into the ring stinking to high heaven, daring his opponent to get up close and grapple with what could only be described as a human dung heap.

Cheesy old dog wouldn’t even come close to describing the pong.

Which just goes to show, some folks aren’t too fussy how they gain an edge.

When it comes to graphic design, however, we’re a little more subtle.

Even in our genteel world there are tactics and techniques we use to ensure your work get the attention it deserves.

Until next week.
