OMG, you’ve got some post …!
With a reassuring ‘clack’, the latch lifted, and the ancient old oak door swung smoothly on its hand forged hinges.
In truth, I wasn’t too sure what to expect on the other side, but the beautifully polished historic brass door furniture suggested we were in for a pleasant surprise.
Outside, the weather was absolutely foul.
Late January was doing its worst with low scudding clouds and biting cold rain stinging our faces as we stepped inside into another world.
As I gently shut the door behind us, it was like stepping back in time.
A roaring fire warmed the reception area where two elderly hotel guests sat reading their morning papers.
There was almost no other sound apart from the occasional gentle swish as pages were turned and the two readers harrumphed over the latest news.
So timeless was the scene that the day’s headlines could just as easily have been about the Relief of Ladysmith.
(The day British forces successfully broke the 118-day Boer siege during
the Second Boer War.)
A Club Med 18-30 disco with all its hideous noise, this was not. The complete opposite, in fact.
And it was pure bliss.
We all live incredibly busy lives, and ‘noise’ assaults us from all sides from dawn until dusk.
And many think the only way to stand out and get noticed is to make even more noise.
They may have a point, but sometimes, quietly sending a postcard to your prospective customers cuts through the clutter.
It gets noticed, too. After all, who gets stuff in the post these days?
Until next week.
