Business Cards Without the Jargon

If you are ordering business cards for the first time or replacing cards that never quite felt right, the choices can quickly become confusing.

Thick card, soft touch, spot varnish, silk, matte… before long, it starts sounding less like print and more like a word-soup of technical jargon.

At Fineline in Ruthin, we speak to businesses across North Wales every week who simply want business cards that look professional, feel right, and are easy to order.

This guide strips away the jargon and explains the bits that actually matter.

Start with the feel, not the specification

Most people do not buy business cards because of a barely understandable spec.

They buy them because they want to make a good first impression.

That first touch matters more than many people realise.

A flimsy card feels forgettable within seconds. A well-made card feels reassuring and professional before anyone has even read a word on it.

As a rough guide:

  • Standard cards are ideal for everyday use, networking, appointments, and events.
  • Soft-touch cards feel smoother and more premium, with a velvety, matt-laminated finish that people comment on immediately.
  • Extra-thick cards feel bold and substantial without needing flashy design tricks.

The important thing is not choosing the “best” card. It is choosing the one that best suits your business.

The mistake many people make

One of the biggest traps with business cards is cramming in too much.

Too much text. Too many colours. Too busy.

They just need to do one thing superbly well: make people remember you.

The best cards are clear, uncluttered, and easy to read.

One strong logo. Clear contact details. Enough breathing room that nothing feels squeezed in with a shoehorn.

A clean, confident card nearly always beats one trying desperately to impress.

Why different finishes matter more than people think

This is where print companies sometimes get lost in technical waffle.

So here’s the simple version.

Soft-touch laminate

Smooth, modern, and non-reflective. It gives colours a rich, calm appearance and feels noticeably more premium in the hand. The mat film also provides a protective layer that keeps your cards looking pristine months after you’ve handed them out.

Foil

Foil adds shiny metallic highlights, usually gold or silver. Used sparingly, it can look superb. Used without care, it looks brash and cheap.

Spot varnish

This is the clever little trick where part of the card shines while the rest stays matte.

Spot varnish is usually applied over a matt laminated card to create contrast.

Parts of the design, often logos, patterns, or large lettering, are given a glossy finish while the rest of the card stays smooth and matte.

As the card catches the light, those glossy areas subtly stand out, giving the card a more premium and polished feel without becoming overly flashy.

Used well, it quietly draws attention to logos or key details, giving the card a more expensive, polished feel without overdoing it.

Usually it is applied to:

  • logos
  • patterns
  • large lettering
  • simple graphic shapes

Done well, it adds subtle impact without shouting for attention.

The trick is restraint. One standout effect is usually far stronger than several competing for attention.

Are expensive business cards worth it?

Sometimes yes. Sometimes absolutely not.

If your cards are handed out occasionally at networking events, a clean standard card may be perfect.

If your business relies heavily on reputation, presentation, or high-value work, upgrading the finish can genuinely strengthen the impression you leave behind.

People often remember how something felt long after they forget what was written on it.

That is why premium stocks and finishes can work so well when used thoughtfully.

Business cards still matter – perhaps more than ever

People have predicted the death of business cards for years.

Meanwhile, thousands still get handed out every single day.

Why?

Because they are quick, personal, and surprisingly memorable.

A name and phone number hastily scribbled on a notepad is lost in moments.

A good business card quietly sits in a wallet, on a desk, or tucked into a notebook, waiting to remind someone you exist.

And unlike digital adverts, business cards do not vanish because somebody sneezed near the refresh button.

Artwork worries? You are not alone.

Many people become nervous at this stage.

‘What if my file is wrong?’
‘What if the colours don’t come out right?’
‘What if I spend money and still end up disappointed?’

Most people ordering business cards are not print experts, and they shouldn’t need to be.

If you already have artwork prepared, brilliant. A print-ready PDF is ideal.

If not, we can usually help tidy things up, check files over, or point out anything that might cause problems before the job goes anywhere near the press.

That alone can save a surprising amount of stress.

A few simple design tips

These small details make a huge difference:

  • Keep text large enough to read comfortably.
  • Leave space around the edges.
  • Stick to one main phone number and email address where possible.
  • Use contrast properly; pale grey text on white card may look ‘minimalist’ on screen, but can become practically invisible when printed on card.
  • If you use a QR code, test it before sending artwork.

And one important tip:
Avoid putting thin borders around the edge of the card.

Even tiny movements during trimming can make borders appear uneven. It is one of those things designers learn through experience, so there’s no need to reinvent the wheel with your cards.

What happens next

Ordering your cards printed is simpler than many people expect:

  1. Choose your style and quantity.
  2. Send your artwork.
  3. Receive a proof if required.
  4. Approve the design.
  5. We print and deliver.

That is it.
